8 Dimensions of Wellness. part 1
DIMENSION 1: PHYSICAL WELLNESS
Your Body and Your Mind Are on the Same Team
Physical wellness is often the first dimension people think about when they hear the word "wellness", and for good reason. The relationship between the body and the brain is direct and well-researched. When we care for our bodies, our mental health benefits in measurable ways.
Exercise is one of the clearest examples of this connection. When you move your body, walking, swimming, cycling, dancing, or any activity that gets your heart rate up, your brain releases endorphins and increases levels of serotonin and dopamine. These are the same neurotransmitters that many antidepressant medications target. Regular physical activity has been shown to reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety, sometimes as effectively as medication for mild to moderate cases.
Sleep is another area where physical and mental health overlap significantly. Poor or insufficient sleep disrupts emotional regulation, makes it harder to manage stress, and lowers the threshold for anxiety and irritability. Most adults need between seven and nine hours of sleep per night to function well emotionally. If sleep is a struggle for you, it is worth addressing, not just for your body, but for your mind.
Nutrition also plays a role. Research in nutritional psychiatry has found links between diet quality and mental health outcomes. Diets high in processed foods are associated with higher rates of depression, while diets rich in vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats tend to support better mood and cognitive function.
Practically, this means that the choices you make about your body matter for how you feel mentally. You do not need to overhaul your lifestyle overnight. Start with one thing — going to bed 30 minutes earlier, adding a short daily walk, drinking more water. Small, consistent habits accumulate into real improvements in how you feel.
Physical wellness is not about looking a certain way. It is about giving your body what it needs so your mind has the support it needs too.
